Today is Cal Ripken, Sr.’s birthday.  After he passed away in 1999, his family started the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to honor his memory and carry on his legacy of coaching players who were not just great athletes, but great teammates and uncommon people.  Those of you who use sports to teach life lessons to kids and help them develop into uncommon people all help carry on this legacy.

However, Cal, Sr. was also a husband and a father.  So, in honor of his birthday, we wanted to share a slightly more personal perspective.  Here’s Vi Ripken on marrying her high school sweetheart, raising a family together, and what made Cal, Sr. so uncommon:
